Wood buying guide for fireplaces
If you are new to owning a wood burning fireplace, the term unseasoned wood may be familiar to you. Unseasoned wood is wood that has not been left to dry properly or is termed as green or wet wood. Wood with a moisture content of more than 20% is deemed as wet our unseasoned wood.
Dry or seasoned wood has been left out to dry for a long period of time, allowing the moisture trapped in the fibres to evaporate and leave the wood dry. You can tell if wood is seasoned by examining the ends of the wood. Wood that is darker in colour and cracked is well seasoned. Dry wood will also be lighter than wet wood. A greenish colour or inability to peel back the bark from the logs can indicate wet wood. If you are not certain, you can purchase a moisture meter from your local fireplace merchant.
Not only is wet wood difficult to burn, it creates a build-up of creosote which can harden into tar if left uncleaned. An excessive build-up of creosote can result in a chimney fire which is extremely dangerous.
When buying wood for your stove, ensure you use a reputable merchant and check the quality of the wood you purchase. Wood merchants will have a good stock of seasoned hardwood as these tend to smoke less, deposit less resin in your flue and burn adequately.
Never burn waste, garbage or documentation in your fireplace. Don’t burn firewood that has been collected from the seaside as the corrosive salts in the timber will not fare well in a fire. Burning treated or painted wood is also not recommended as it releases hazardous fumes.
