What should I know about chimney or stove care?
- You will need a professional chimney sweep done at least annually. Arrange this service before the winter months.
- Only remove ash (if possible) when it has totally cooled down. Hot ash can be dangerous and should be handled with care.
- Keep furniture at least 95 centimetres away from a fireplace and use a screen if you have an open fireplace.
- Inspect the surrounding area for heat damage and attend to that as soon as possible.
- Only use dry or seasoned wood in a wood burning stove.
- Pay attention to opening the damper when your fire is lit and to close it when your fireplace is not in use.
- Investigate the need for a chimney cap to keep unwanted animals out of your chimney.
Safety Tips
Here are 6 safety tips to keep in mind:
- Examine your fireplace and surrounds for heat damage or cracks. These situations should be addressed immediately.
- Inspect the interior of your fireplace, if a lining has deteriorated, it will need to be repaired professionally. Ignoring this will result in permanent damage due to excessive heat build-up.
- If you discover smoke stains on the walls or roof in close proximity to your fireplace, there may be a gap that needs to be sealed or fixed. Smoke stains could also indicate that there is a problem with your damper.
- Have your chimney serviced annually and always check for obstructions, debris etc. before lighting your fire.
- A fire extinguisher should be on hand at all times and this apparatus should be in proper working order.
- Teach children and pets (if possible) to steer clear from a fireplace as even closed fireplaces can be hot to the touch.
